Update: on 4/05/07 We went back to look at it again. Work was supposed to start two months ago but the only signs of work was more pipes were drilled to monitor the fire. The fire has spread beyond the hill we saw several months ago.

In 2007 a project to contain the mine fire was underway. This is the trench that I described in the header of this page. The fire advanced enough that a sewer line had to be relocated and it is also heading towards the Casey Highway. Due to the heavy construction traffic, going to this location couldn't be done while work was in progress. The underground miners were able to take some aerial pictures of the trench work. The pictures I have are after the trench was complete and a fence now encompasses the entire site.

Winter is the best time to see the smoke & steam as the fire is underground. Back in 2006-2007 the fire was seen on the surface after the first trench project. Over time, the smoke & steam seen from East Lackawanna Ave seem to show the fire moving towards the Throop side. The trench is designed to encircle the fire around three sides, The fourth side is believed not to have any coal so the fire would be blocked. Here are some recent winter pictures of the same location as shown in the 2010 pictures.
